Tabitha Lewis says LaGrange needs to move forward together

Tabitha Lewis was raised in District 2. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from LaGrange College and a master's degree in public administration from Troy University, and is completing a Ph.D. in public policy.

Lewis currently serves as the regional director of Communities in Schools of Troup County, which places professional site coordinators inside public and charter schools to help at-risk students stay in school, address chronic absenteeism and graduate. Prior to heading up Communities in Schools, Lewis worked for the state of Georgia with the Department of Labor doing vocational rehabilitation, disability adjudation and working with behavioral health and developmental disabilities.

Economic Development and Small Business: “Kia and its suppliers have proven LaGrange can grow. Now the retail and amenities need to catch up. Tabitha will fight to bring real investment back to LaGrange Mall and the surrounding corridor, and support the local, minority-owned, and family businesses already carrying downtown, so growth creates opportunity on every block of District 2, not just the ones already thriving.”

Advocates for workforce training to fill local jobs and help residents earn living wages.

Lewis suggested job training for economic development. “We have several jobs here, but the training for those jobs is lacking, so we see individuals coming from outside of LaGrange to fill those positions. I think if we tackle the economic development side, it will also help with a lot of the other problems. We'll see less violence among our youth because they'll be trained to be able to enter the workforce or go to college. We'll also see fewer issues with homelessness, and it will help with the affordable housing issue because people with jobs that actually make a living wage will be able to afford homes and purchase homes, and we will then see District 2 begin to access some of the wealth that is available by using the resources that are there for development of our smaller businesses, so that they too can be fruitful in District 2,” Lewis said.

Youth Engagement and Development: “LaGrange's future depends on the young people growing up here today, and not every student is headed to a four-year degree. Tabitha will champion trade and apprenticeship partnerships between LaGrange City Schools, LaGrange College, and local employers, and back the mentorship programs and safe spaces that keep District 2's youth engaged, supported, and headed somewhere real.”

Affordable Housing and Responsible Growth: “LaGrange is growing, and that's a good thing, but growth shouldn't mean pricing longtime neighbors out of the neighborhoods they built. Tabitha will push for responsible development standards, real affordable housing options for working families, and infrastructure that keeps pace with new rooftops, so District 2 keeps its small-town character even as the city keeps growing.”

Supports stricter enforcement on blighted properties and repair-grant opportunities that help homeowners maintain affordable rents.

Lewis said there needs to be stricter code enforcement, but noted help is sometimes available to repair blighted homes. “I agree that there do need to be stricter enforcement on these blighted properties, but also there needs to be an opportunity for homeowners to repair those homes,” Lewis said, noting grants are sometimes available to help. “People often worry if those homes are repaired, the rent will go up, and they can no longer afford the rent, but there are grants available where the homeowners can repair those homes and maintain that affordable rent. We need to look into that as an opportunity for homeowners, and then they can bring those homes up to code. The individuals can maintain their homes, and our community starts looking better.”

Wants to hold landlords accountable for repairing homes in disrepair while using grants to avoid transferring costs to tenants.

Lewis said she would support affordable housing initiatives that are already in place, like the LaGrange Housing Authority, DASH and Habitat for Humanity, and educating people about the services that are available. “Affordable housing is economic development and workforce development, so making sure that the people in the community are educated and trained and able to get those jobs that are coming into our community, so that they can afford a decent home, a decent place to live,” Lewis said. “Another initiative that I would like to see is that we get behind these landlords who have homes that are in disrepair, holding them accountable and making sure that they repair those homes. There are opportunities and grants available where those repairs can be made, and that cost does not have to transfer to those tenants,” Lewis said.

Plans to include youth in discussions about the causes of youth violence.

Lewis said that youth need to be involved in conversations about reducing youth violence. “When we start talking about violence and youth, the first person or people we need to include and talk to are youth. They seem to be forgotten and left out of the conversation. Currently, in my work with Communities in Schools — we're in 13 schools across Troup County — the conversation is always about what's causing the violence and what are the issues that they're seeing. That's the first conversation that I would have,” Lewis said.
