Rollo Milton

“I'm homegrown right there on Fannin Street, right there in the heart and soul of District 2,” Milton said, recalling going to the William Griggs Recreation Center growing up. “That’s one of the crown jewels of District 2. We called it ‘The Rec.’ We always went to the Griggs Recreation Center, where we took swimming lessons when we were young. Everything centered around the Griggs Center.”

Opposes high utility rates and says the city should keep them under control.

Discussing government spending, Milton said some projects could be cut while others were needed. He then said: “Some of the projects that they spend on they could cut, and some are needed, but the main thing is we don't need to have a high utility rate,” Milton said. “One thing that I paid close attention to was the utility rates. We didn't have a rate increase [this year] in the city, and they kept it pretty much under control.”

Economy

Wants a grocery store and drugstore near Hamilton Road so older residents have closer access to groceries and medicine.

Milton described his vision for residents' access to groceries and medicine: “My vision for District 2 is for the elders to have a drugstore in their community and a grocery store in the Hamilton Road proximity,” Milton said. “We need them so the elders don’t have to drive across town to get a meal, pick up their medicine or pick up their groceries.”

Milton said he wants to continue town hall meetings held by District 2 council members. He said: “You have to go out and speak to your people, speak to your constituents. The town halls are a great thing to hear from the community, and I always keep an open line of communication from our constituents, back to the council and back to the mayor,” Milton said.

Public Services

Plans to increase District 2 neighborhood cleanups and code enforcement related to abandoned houses.

Milton said he would clean up District 2. “The first issue that I will tackle would be cleaning the neighborhood. We would have to get out there and make sure the neighborhood gets clean every week, and for the abandoned houses, we're going to have to step up code enforcement on the abandoned houses. That’s been a serious issue in District 2,” Milton said.

After calling for weekly neighborhood cleanup and stronger code enforcement for abandoned houses, Milton said: “The city has some money allocated in the budget to clean up neighborhoods, just like they do once a month. We might get it moved up twice a month on Fridays,” Milton suggested.

Housing & Urban Development

Plans to expand neighborhood watches and police neighborhood roll calls to reduce crime.

Milton provided a few suggestions for reducing violent crime, including having or improving neighborhood watches. He then said: “We will have neighborhood watches where we check on our neighbors. The second one would be working with the police force, having the LaGrange Police Department come out to your neighborhood and do a roll call. Sometimes, when police vehicles are in the neighborhood, crime goes down,” Milton said.

Prioritizes public safety in city budget decisions.

Milton said his philosophy on government spending is to look at the pros and cons of budget cuts before deciding where to spend. Public safety is the top priority, he said.

Plans to examine District 2 infrastructure to get it “back up to par.”

Milton said he decided to run for office after seeing District 2 go downhill. He said: “I've been paying attention to the city council since about 2010. You know, I just go to the council and watch how they vote and how they set the budget. I’ve been looking at how District 2 has started to go downhill, and I want to look at the infrastructure in District 2 to get it back up to par,” Milson said, explaining he doesn’t want the district to continue falling behind.
