HARRISBURG, Apr. 27 – Today, the House passed a bill introduced by state Rep. Jim Prokopiak, D-Bucks, that would require that the academic standards adopted by the State Board of Education are updated to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge necessary to safely and responsibly navigate social media and mobile technology. House Bill 2176 would require that public schools educate students as to the effects of social media and mobile device usage, including potential mental, psychological, physical impacts, and potential impacts on academic growth and learning. In addition, the legislation instructs that the curriculum cover responsible usage of social media, including how to identify suspicious online behavior such as cyberbullying, predatory behavior, and potential human trafficking, as well as the best practices for maintaining personal security.

State Rep. Jim Prokopiak hosted the PA House Majority Policy Committee for a roundtable and tour at Morrisville on Wednesday so lawmakers could hear firsthand how the additional funds are being spent. “When we invest in our public schools, students win and our communities win,” said Prokopiak, who represents portions of Bucks County, including Morrisville. “More dollars mean smaller school sizes and more resources for greater academic and mental health support – something that’s not possible when schools are underfunded.”

“Pennsylvania needs to do more to shoulder some of the responsibility for school construction and renovations so that it is not just local taxpayers footing the bill,” said Representative Prokopiak. "The $500,000 grant from the state is a much-needed step for local taxpayers as Pennsbury builds a new school to service the next generation of students."
