The Pilot Mountain Board of Commissioners appointed Vincent Hancock to fill the town’s vacant commissioner seat on Feb. 26, restoring the board to full membership after nearly three months of leadership transition. Hancock, who retired in December after 33 years with the federal government, is a 27-year Pilot Mountain resident who serves on the town’s Planning and Zoning Board. He was chosen from among five candidates who applied for the position and will serve until the November 2026 election.

Hancock said the board must develop a long-term plan for infrastructure and public safety needs rather than reacting to crises. He noted the police department has had to finance all its new vehicles, adding to the town’s debt burden, and said the department needs to grow. “We’re not going to do that overnight,” he said. “But we need to have a plan of how we’re going to do it over the next two years, three years, five years.”
