Tom has served as New York state comptroller since being appointed to the position by the New York state legislature in 2007. He was elected to full terms in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022. Before becoming comptroller, he represented the 16th District in the New York State Assembly from 1987 to 2007. He also served on the Mineola Board of Education from 1972 to 1976.
