Park Hills settles on new venue, allowing council to finally meet in person

I have been on council for six years and was instrumental in bringing the city’s budget from a negative cash position to a healthy savings reserve of over three month’s operating cost – approximately $625,000. Along with that, we have gotten numerous road projects completed and will continue to move forward efficiently in completing all streets in Park Hills.

Prioritizes resident input in city decisions and budgeting.

We need to listen and work with the people of the city to get the needs of the city done. The people are the taxpayers and their input for decisions is important. I like to have a good solid budget that reflects the needs of the taxpayers.

I also found tax-free financing at a low rate to use to get the larger road projects accomplished more swiftly. Additionally, as a result of my vigilance the city has more modern equipment, a website and better ways to communicate.

A few years ago, we were able to pay the debt incurred in 2010 for our new fire truck off early. This was accomplished with careful fiscal management. I asked for the ordinance to reduce the road tax from the 2.35/1000 to the current 1.55/1000. This is adequate to keep the road projects going.

The mayor wants to install speed humps on other streets. In addition, 10 crosswalk stop signs given to the city for free by “Devou Good” will be installed along schools and busy streets.

“This is all in trying to make it a safer, more walkable city for the children and adults as well,” Zembrodt said. “You have strollers and people are just distracted with their driving now, so I do think this is going to be a really good thing.”

Park Hills Mayor Kathy Zembrodt agreed that a noise wall should be included in plans.

“I’d be on board with providing a resolution or a letter about a wall,” she said. “I always thought Ft. Wright needed one. Ft. Mitchell has one, Ft. Wright needs one.”

- The duties of the mayor depend on the type of government within the city,
- If the city has a mayor-council form of government, the mayor is responsible for the executive and administrative functions of the government. They oversee all city departments, but cannot vote in most council matters.
- If the city has a mayor-aldermen form of government, the mayor is responsible for executing and enforcing local and state laws. The mayor may appoint city officials with approval from the aldermen.
- If the city has a mayor-commission form of government, the mayor presides over the city commissioners and can vote within the commission. The mayor is responsible for executing all decisions reached by the commission.
- If the city has a city manager form of government, the mayor presides over the city commissioners and can vote within the commission. The mayor is recognized as the head of the city department but does not have any regular administrative duties.
- City mayors are elected during general elections for a four-year term. Most cities in Kentucky hold nonpartisan elections for mayor.
