Advocates reviewing city revenues and waste before raising taxes or utility rates.

Jim Brumfield said that he would like to see the council take a three-step approach to handling the budget each fiscal year. “I contend that what we have to do, and still have to do in this fiscal year, is to take a closer look at our budget and make sure of three things,” he said. “One, that we have properly recorded all of the estimated revenues. Two, that there is not any waste. And if we have recorded all the revenues that there are, and we’re confident that there’s no waste, then the other alternative is we’re going to have to look at raising rates.” “I’m not in favor of just off the gun saying here’s what we had last year, here’s what we want this year, we’re going to have to raise taxes to get what we want,” he said. “I treat the city’s money like I do my own. You’ve got to review what you have before you impose any more taxes or rate hikes on citizens.”
