Timothy is originally from Harrisburg, where he still lives today. He earned an associate's degree in paralegal studies from Harrisburg Area Community College, a bachelor's degree in sociology and history from the University of Pittsburgh, and a master's degree in project management from Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. He currently serves on the boards of the Harrisburg Area Community College Foundation, the State YMCA of Pennsylvania, and the Chris “Handles” Franklin Foundation. 

Timothy previously worked as a fraud investigator and internal auditor in the private sector and federal government, including for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has also worked as a special investigator with Pennsylvania's Office of Inspector General and as a special agent with Pennsylvania's Attorney General. 

Timothy DeFoor currently serves as the auditor general for Pennsylvania. He was elected in 2020 and is serving his 1st term. He previously served as controller for Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was first elected in 2015 and served 2 terms in office.

Timothy Lionel DeFoor is currently the Pennsylvania Auditor General, elected in 2020. He previously served as Dauphin County Controller from 2016 to 2020. DeFoor has also worked as a Special Investigator with Pennsylvania's Office of Inspector General, a Special Agent with Pennsylvania's Attorney General, and a Fraud Investigator and Internal Auditor in the private sector and federal government.

- The Department of the Auditor General conducts financial audits to ensure the validity of reported information and performance audits to check if tax dollars are being spent effectively.  
- The Department of the Auditor General makes sure fines, taxes, and other charges are properly assessed, collected, and given to the appropriate state agency.
