Jerry moved to Raleigh in 1953, and attended local public schools there. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is married with three grown children.

Joe is from East Chicago, Indiana. He has bachelors, masters, and law degrees from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He and his wife Evelyn have three grown children and live in North Raleigh. 

Prior to his service in the North Carolina House, Joe worked as a 
special assistant to the director and executive director in the North Carolina State Crime Laboratory. He has also worked as the deputy commissioner, acting commissioner, and director of hearings for the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles and as a judge in the Court of Appeals, Superior Court, and District Courts of North Carolina.
