Joe is from East Chicago, Indiana. He has bachelors, masters, and law degrees from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He and his wife Evelyn have three grown children and live in North Raleigh.

Jerry moved to Raleigh in 1953, and attended local public schools there. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is married with three grown children.

Jerry is retired. Previously, he has owned multiple businesses, including a Blimpie Base sub shop, a small chain of Dry Cleaners and Coin Laundries named 'The Cleaners', several rental houses, and WashLand of Wilson.
