He earned an associate's degree from Lenoir Community College and a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Chris is married to Terry, and they have 2 daughters. He served as the President of the La Grange Chamber of Commerce and holds membership in the Kinston and Goldsboro Kiwanis Clubs, the Goldsboro Civitans, and the Rotary Club of Kinston.
