Lupe was born in Phoenix and graduated from Westview High School. He attended Estrella Mountain Community College and Glendale Community College. He is married to his wife, Sara, with whom he has six children and three grandchildren. He previously coached wrestling for K-12 youth at the Desert Devils Wrestling program. 

Lupe works as the Director of New Business and Enrollment at an insurance agency, PomeroyGroup. 

Lupe Chavira Contreras currently serves as a State Representative in District 22. He was elected to this position in 2023 and is serving his first term. He previously served as a State Representative in District 19. He was elected to this position in 2014 and served for two terms. He currently serves as the Minority Leader for the Arizona House of Representatives.
