Political background

In 2018, Fred Swan ran for Agriculture Commissioner but lost in the general election to Republican Gary Black. At the beginning of 2018, Swann had announced his campaign to become the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 8th District, but he withdrew before the Democratic primary to run for Agriculture Commissioner. Swann has served as the Eighth Congressional District Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia and currently serves as a Vice-Chair for Greening Georgia, the environmental caucus of the party.
