John is originally from Red Oak, Texas. He earned his associate's degree from Navarro College, his bachelor's degree in business management from Dallas Baptist University, and a master's degree in technical management from Texas A&M University. He land his wife, Karen, have two adult children and attend Eastridge Baptist Church where John is a deacon.

John is a technical project program manager at Applied Materials, a semiconductor company. He previously worked as an outage coordinator at Vinson Process Controls. He served as an electrician in the United States Navy for 12 years.

John currently serves as a trustee for the Red Oak Independent School District. He was first elected in 2002 and is serving his eighth term.
