5. If Webb County was forced to cut resources due to budget constraints, what would you cut and why?
I would continue evaluating the budget and compare our departments with other counties, and reduce where we absolutely need to. The one thing that I would not compromise on is law enforcement and safety resources. I believe we are getting to a place where offices that needed staff have them and those that were over staffed are equalized. It’s a difficult position to be in and I hope the much needed revenue source, the bridge, will give us some breathing room in the future.

On the conflict in Iran, Tijerina said he supported Trump’s actions and would vote to put boots on the ground if it would protect the United States’ interests.

“I would have supported starting [the war], but there has to be an end time,” he said. “And I think that end time needs to happen pretty quick.”

But he expressed an openness to legislation that creates a pathway to citizenship for people brought to the country illegally as children or that allows guest workers to enter the country.

“There's got to be programs that you have an opportunity for them to come, whether it’s a 10-year plan, a five-year plan, break-the-law-you-will-go-back-to-your-country,” he said. “But there’s gotta be ways to bring them on. Why are we gonna hide our head in the sand right now?”
