HB 3169 targets the Village of Volente specifically from non-residents who are only acting in the best interests of commercial activities. Our ordinances are in place to not only protect ALL property owners and their rights to live in their homes peacefully, but also to help protect our property values as well. Taking away our ability to enforce our ordinances against short-term rentals would undermine what the majority of our citizens in this district stand for and the years of work that has gone into governing the Village. While all of our citizens do not agree 100% on all things in our ordinances, we all have a vested interest in protecting our property values and the quality of life the Village currently offers.

Following almost two hours of testimony during its May 16 meeting, city council members voted to deny a request by Odessa-based homeowners for a conditional use permit that would allow the operation of a short-term rental at 16601 Jackson Street. Councilmembers Kit Hopkins and Mark Metro, along with Mayor Pro Tem Tony Ruff, voted down the agenda item, with Councilmember Sean Brown being the lone vote to approve the measure.
