A: I'm a community banker. I’ve been with the Community Bank for 10 years. Before that, I ran a regional title company, and going back even further before that, I used to represent a regional nonprofit economic development organization that served 12 counties across the East and deep East Texas.

Trent currently serves in the Texas House of Representatives, representing House District 9. He was first elected to the Texas House in 2012. He previously served on the Lufkin Independent School District Board of Trustees for more than six years.

Q: What is your stance on property tax relief, and how do you differ from your opponent?
A: The biggest difference is I'm the only candidate in this race that has a track record of actually voting to cut property taxes. I have voted for every property tax cut since I became a member of the Texas House.

Now, the one other thing that I would mention is, while the work the legislature has done for property tax relief is nice, that's one side of the equation. One thing that you don't hear enough from lawmakers in Austin about is where I believe the focus should be next session, which is reigning in skyrocketing appraisal values. So appraisal reform is also at the top of my list, under the category of property taxes for next session. Because while it's great what we're doing to compress school district property taxes, we really haven't accomplished what our objective is in terms of Austin. We need to get serious about appraisal reform during the next session, and I plan to take a leadership role in that effort.

Q: What are the most important things for people to know about your campaign?
A: I would say one of the most important things that people need to know about my campaign is I have a record of doing what I say I'll do. I've cut taxes and defended our sanctity of life. I've protected our precious Southeast and East Texas water. I've been proud to stand with our law enforcement community to improve our border security operations and fight for our schools.

Q: What bills or wins do you consider your greatest achievements?
A: I would say first and foremost, the work that I've been able to do to bring home property tax relief. Whether that was through compression of school district taxes with part of our surplus, or as people just experienced through our constitutional amendment election by putting forward initiatives such as raising our homestead exemption so that our property owners and homeowners could also realize greater property tax relief. [...] This past session, I was really proud to co-author bills that brought prayer and our 10 Commandments back into our schools. So I'm just really proud of the work that I've been able to do in terms of authoring and co-authoring bills during my tenure in the Texas House.
