Soto is a moderate Republican whose positions on several issues mirror those of Garcia, including on Medicaid expansion and supporting gun safety reviews. But on school vouchers, the two candidates are much different. Soto said she does not support vouchers as they were proposed during the prior Legislature, but she would support a system that covers the full cost of private school for those with lower incomes.

Garcia is steadfast in her position that vouchers are a scam being peddled to Texans and that public education needs to be fully funded — full stop.

In response to a question about Texas laws restricting gender-affirming care for transgender minors, Garcia said: “I come from the military medical field and there are laws in place, the Hippocratic Oath there are and the Hippocratic Oath states that we do no harm. Doctors go to school to become the profession, the professionals of their fields. And I don't believe the legislator has a room to be making medical decisions for families.”
