Roderick C. Garner, Sr.

Roderick is from Foster Place, Houston, Texas. He attended The Willowridge High School. He previously worked as a state parole officer for six months, as a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety, as a Narcotics Sergeant/Investigator on a DEA joint drug task force, as an English teacher and head baseball coach at Willowridge High School for ten years, as a criminal justice instructor and peace officer trainer after earning a master’s degree, as a Captain in Waller County while attending Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and as Chief Deputy for the Fort Bend County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office for four years.

Roderick is a justice of the peace. He works at Fort Bend County Justice Court, Precinct 2, Place 1, where he has been since his election in November 2022. He previously served as chief deputy for the Fort Bend County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office for four years, and before that as a captain in the Waller County Constable’s Office while attending Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He also taught criminal justice courses at Colorado Technical University and training academy courses for peace officers. Earlier, he spent ten years as an English teacher and head baseball coach at Willowridge High School. He began his career with six months as a state parole officer and then joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1994 as a trooper and later as a narcotics sergeant and investigator on a federal drug task force.

- Justices of the Peace oversee Justice Courts, trial courts for civil cases up to $20,000, and misdemeanor cases punishable only by fine. They also perform marriages, issue warrants, conduct preliminary hearings, and serve as notaries.
- Texas has 835 Justice Courts, each presided over by a single judge. Every county has between one and eight precincts based on the county's population, each with its own Justice Court.
- Justices of the Peace are elected through partisan, precinct-wide election to four-year terms. 
- Candidates must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, have been a Texas resident for at least 12 consecutive months, a district resident for at least six consecutive months, and registered to vote in that precinct.
- The annual salary for Justices of the Peace ranges from $19,207 to $151,805 and is by the county's Commissioners Court.
