Upon graduation from law school, Phil received a job offer from Tarrant County District Attorney Tim Curry. Phil accepted that offer and joined the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office where he worked as a prosecutor.

Phil and his wife of more than three decades, Susan, have three grown children and live in North Richland Hills. Together they are active members of North Richland Hills Baptist Church.

Phil Sorrells grew up in Lubbock and earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Texas Tech University. Upon graduation from law school, Phil received a job offer from Tarrant County District Attorney Tim Curry. Phil accepted that offer and joined the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office where he worked as a prosecutor. Five years later, Phil ran for judge of County Criminal Court No. 10 against an incumbent; Phil won that race, becoming a judge at the age of 32.

After serving as the judge of that court for 25 years, he resigned in November of 2021 to run for District Attorney. He won that election and was sworn in as Tarrant County's 15th elected District Attorney on January 1, 2023.

Phil's 25-year tenure as the judge of County Criminal Court No. 10 has been marked by excellence. In just over a year, Phil took the court from having the largest backlog to the smallest. Phil has managed the taxpayers' money efficiently, consistently operating one of the lowest-spending criminal courts in Tarrant County.

Public Safety

As District Attorney, Phil leads one of the largest prosecutor’s offices in Texas, working alongside more than 50 law enforcement agencies throughout Tarrant County. Under his leadership, the office has strengthened partnerships with law enforcement, improved efficiency, modernized discovery and evidence-sharing practices, and remained focused on prosecuting violent offenders, organized criminal activity, human trafficking, drug trafficking, child exploitation, and other serious crimes.

Said his office will protect elections from people who commit voter fraud.

Phil Sorrells, Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney, wrote in a statement released Thursday that the trial court's guilty verdict should be affirmed. "Voting is a cornerstone of our democracy," he said. "This office will protect the ballot box from fraudsters who think our laws don't apply to them." The statement was issued in connection with the office's appeal after Crystal Mason's illegal-voting acquittal.

Criminal Justice
