Phil Sorrells grew up in Lubbock. He earned an undergraduate degree and a law degree from Texas Tech University. Phil lives in North Richland Hills with his wife, Susan, and they have three grown children; they are active members of North Richland Hills Baptist Church.

Phil Sorrells previously worked as a prosecutor and as an assistant criminal district attorney in the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.

Phil won election as Tarrant County’s Criminal District Attorney and was sworn in on January 1, 2023. Previously, he was elected judge of County Criminal Court No. 10 in 1998 and served as its judge for 25 years.

Before becoming a judge, Phil served as an Assistant Criminal District Attorney, prosecuting felony offenses ranging from theft and robbery to murder. That experience gave him a firsthand understanding of the impact crime has on victims, families, and neighborhoods and reinforced his belief that the criminal justice system must protect law-abiding citizens while holding offenders accountable.

After serving as the judge of that court for 25 years, he resigned in November of 2021 to run for District Attorney. He won that election and was sworn in as Tarrant County's 15th elected District Attorney on January 1, 2023. Phil has spent his entire career serving the people of Tarrant County.

Public Safety

As District Attorney, Phil leads one of the largest prosecutor’s offices in Texas, working alongside more than 50 law enforcement agencies throughout Tarrant County. Under his leadership, the office has strengthened partnerships with law enforcement, improved efficiency, modernized discovery and evidence-sharing practices, and remained focused on prosecuting violent offenders, organized criminal activity, human trafficking, drug trafficking, child exploitation, and other serious crimes.

Criminal Justice

- Represents the state and victims of crime in prosecuting felony-level and misdemeanor criminal cases in district courts within the county. Represents the county in civil cases.
- Can be at sole discretion as to whether a case is prosecuted.
- Works with law enforcement officers in criminal case investigations, while preparing arrest and search warrants.
- Represents victims of domestic abuse through obtaining protective orders. Represents children in Child Protective Services cases.
- Provides county officials with written opinions or advice on their official duties.
- Criminal district attorneys are elected through partisan, county-wide elections to four-year terms. Candidates must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, have been a Texas resident for at least 12 consecutive months, a county resident for at least six consecutive months, and registered to vote in that county. They also must be a registered lawyer or judge in the state of Texas.
