Commissioner Andrew Sommerman is a longtime resident of Commissioner District 2. He was first elected to office in November 2022. As a County Commissioner, he strives to make meaningful contributions for the residents of Dallas County. Commissioner Sommerman’s current projects focus on providing workforce housing, ensuring access to affordable, high-quality childcare, and decreasing the jail population by opening deflection centers across the county. In addition, he is launching a community center for Esperanza residents.

Funds that should have been earmarked for homelessness prevention disappeared from the suggested voter approval tax rate budget, said County Commissioner Andy Sommerman. "If it's not in there, then at least one commissioner — this one — is going to say no to it," he said. "Homelessness is the fight for the jail and it is the fight for Parkland."
