About Brian Smith

Brian’s commitment to community is second only to his dedication to family. He resides in Punxsutawney with his wife Linda. They have three children: Jake, Jadie and Josh.

In 2001, he opened Fastrak Inc., a family-owned transportation company, and later added Orion Logistics Inc. (2003), a freight brokerage company. Brian is also co-owner of Abacus Housing LLC (2012), which provides rentals for IUP Culinary Academy students.

Rep. Brian Smith represents the 66th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, serving all of Jefferson County and parts of Indiana County.

Prior to his election to the House, Brian was elected to the Punxsutawney Borough Council in 2014 and became council president in 2016. Brian has also previously served as a board member and vice president of the Punxsutawney Chamber of Commerce; and president and treasurer of the Punxsutawney Rotary Club, where he was named Rotarian of the Year by his peers in 2016 and was awarded the Rotary “Person Of Action” award in 2020.

As a self-employed business owner who has created jobs and successfully met a budget/payroll across several different businesses for more than 20 years, Brian understands the importance of protecting family-sustaining jobs, reducing taxes, repealing crippling regulations, achieving energy independence and holding government fiscally accountable. An uncompromising defender of our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms, Brian is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. His other top legislative priorities include protecting the sanctity of all human life, election reform, enacting common sense laws to allow rural communities and job-creating businesses to flourish, helping to retain and recruit volunteer emergency responders, confronting the drug epidemic, and expanding regional tourism/outdoor activities.

“This agreement spends less than $51 billion, a $1.8 billion increase over last year’s budget. While I still feel that spending is too high, the reality is that we operate in a divided Legislature. This product is the result of months of negotiating to find a compromise that works for Pennsylvania.

“This budget also avoids raiding the Rainy Day Fund. That money is meant for emergencies, not to balance irresponsible budgets.

“While I still believe the total amount of spending is too high, it’s important to remember that good policy decisions drive up revenue. We saw that become a reality during last year’s budget agreement when we dismantled the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). That decision, along with other policy victories, like lowering taxes to promote business growth, led to a substantial increase in state revenue over the last fiscal year. I’m confident that if we continue to keep government out of the way of our business community, we’ll continue to see economic growth that will allow us to stop the structural deficit.”

“Even if I were okay with these things, that still wouldn’t be enough. After all of these asks, the governor would also need to raid the Rainy Day Fund to the tune of over $4.5 billion. That’s almost 60% of our emergency reserves. Just six years removed from the pandemic, I would think our governor should realize how crucial that fund can be.

“It’s past time we break this cycle of irresponsible spending. The General Assembly and the governor need to focus on providing a solid foundation for economic growth, then step back and let businesses drive us forward. Constantly growing the government won’t fix our problems.

“Fortunately for the Commonwealth, this is the start of a long process to get to a final budget plan. That’s a good thing, because it’s going to take a lot of work to get this plan to a place that Pennsylvanians can afford.”

Smith: Latest Budget Plan Feels Like Groundhog Day

“Closing the campground for the entire summer will severely impact the local businesses that depend on seasonal visitors,” Smith said. “The long-term economic harm that may be done easily outweighs the minor benefits of a few new shower houses. The current plan is not in the community’s best interest.”

“This deal includes historic investments in education, providing additional resources for schools across Pennsylvania to support students and teachers.

“This budget also supports our retired public servants, providing a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for the pensions of retired police officers and teachers. This investment recognizes the service and sacrifice of public employees whose retirement benefits have not kept pace with inflation.

“It’s important to keep in mind what this budget did not do, too. For example, House Democrats had been pushing to gut the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, which offers tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to a scholarship organization, an educational improvement organization and/or a pre-kindergarten scholarship organization. Through the negotiating process, we reached an agreement that no programmatic or funding changes will occur for EITC scholarships.

“The women and girls of our Commonwealth deserve an equal playing field,” Smith said. “Their safety and privacy shouldn’t be compromised for the sake of biological males feeling ‘included.’ Female athletes should compete against female athletes, and male athletes should compete against male athletes. This little piece of common sense will go a long way to ensuring a safer and more secure environment in female sports.”

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Brian Smith (R-Jefferson/Indiana) issued this statement following news that the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) will consider a proposal to move opening day of the firearms deer season to the Saturday before Thanksgiving:

“I fully support the Game Commission changing the start of deer season, but this proposal moves it in the wrong direction.

“The Game Commission already made a huge mistake moving the opener from the Monday after Thanksgiving to the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Now, they’re making the problem even worse.

Smith Pushes Back Against PGC Proposals Regarding Deer Hunting Opener

“The Game Commission is once again forcing hunters to choose between family time and time in the woods. I support a move of the current deer season opener, but it should be a move back to the Monday after Thanksgiving, where it belongs.”

“While I still believe the total amount of spending is too high, it’s important to remember that good policy decisions drive up revenue. We saw that become a reality during last year’s budget agreement when we dismantled the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
