Burnis is the sheriff of Robeson County. He works at the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, where he has been serving since 2018. He previously worked at the Lumberton Police Department, joined the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office in 1982 as a patrol deputy and rose through roles including Drug Division Supervisor, federal Drug Task Force supervisor in Hoke and Robeson Counties, and Chief of Detectives; served as a state agent in the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division of the North Carolina Department of Crime Control & Public Safety beginning in 1992; concluded his sworn career as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal with the Eastern District of North Carolina Violent Fugitive Task Force; and, after initially retiring in 2012, served two terms as a Lumberton City Councilman before running for sheriff.
