He previously worked at the Winston-Salem Police Department as a police officer beginning in 1984; at the Winston-Salem Fire Department as an arson investigator and assistant fire marshal starting in 1987; at the North Carolina Department of Probation and Parole working with high-risk offenders; and at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as a special agent investigating organized crime, money laundering, gang violence and drug trafficking from 1995 to 2016.
