A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, John holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master's in Teaching, and later earned his Master of Public Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill. His educational background and deep community roots have shaped his lifelong commitment to public service, education, and rural development.

John L. Lowery is a lifelong resident of Robeson County and a Lumbee. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in teaching from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Before his election as Lumbee Tribal Chairman, John served as a civics teacher, a member of the Lumbee Tribal Council, and in leadership roles with both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the N.C. Department of Commerce. In those roles, he worked to expand economic opportunity and job creation across the Sandhills and other rural regions of North Carolina.
