Filing for the two seats on the Hertford County Soil and Water District Board of Supervisors ended July 7. Only two filed – incumbent board members David Simons III of Murfreesboro and Jimmy Mason of Harrellsville. Their names will be listed on the November ballot.

The only other local election on the 2022 ballot was for Hertford County Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor. David Simons (4,258 votes) and C. Gray Pierce (3,829) were elected.

In the two high profile federal races, Hertford County voters favored Cheri Beasley over Ted Budd (4,095 – 2,387) for U.S. Senate and supported Don Davis over Sandy Smith (4,190 – 2,397) for U.S. House of Representatives (NC District 1).

Ms. Rebecca Castelllo presented the NC 2024 Governors Volunteer Award as follows:

• Jason Howell for 33 outstanding years of service to the Com. Volunteer Fire Department as Chief since 2004
• David Simons – for outstanding service to the Hertford Soil and Water Conservation District and Northeast Watershed Board and as the District Supervisor since April of 2004.

Chairman Lassiter and the Board thanked Mr. Howell and Mr. Simons for their long productive years of volunteer service to the County.
