Sheriff's office chief deputy announces candidacy for sheriff | News

He began his law enforcement career with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office in 1998 with a position at the Warren County Detention Center, ultimately reaching the rank of sergeant-supervisor. Branche completed his training with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office through Vance-Granville Community College.

He then moved to patrol duties. In 2006, he became the lieutenant of investigations and, later, head of investigations.

In 2018, Branche became the captain of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. Two years later, that position was reclassified with the title of chief deputy major.

With state certification as a trainer and coordinator, Branche has served as a law enforcement trainer for the past eight years and now coordinates all training for the sheriff’s office.

During its regular meeting earlier this month, the Warren County Board of Commissioners appointed Major John Branche of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office as interim sheriff from Dec. 1-4, following Sheriff Williams’ retirement. Branche will officially take the oath of office as sheriff on Dec. 5.

Branche repeated his goal of increased community involvement, especially to change the perception of law enforcement among young people. ‘We need more community involvement to have the citizens trust the process, to feel better about talking to us,” Branche said. I want to establish connections with the community and get young people to understand that we are for them and not to be afraid.”

Sheriff John Branche approached the Board to discuss challenges in Law Enforcement. He currently only has two deputies patrolling the entire county at a time because they are short staffed. There is an immediate need to raise the starting salary for Deputies. Sheriff Branche also stated that due to increased safety concerns, the department is going to be moving to body cameras. He also hopes that if he can hire more staff he will be able to allow all Deputies more time to attend training.

I want to make sure this is done in a professional manner and with empathy and understanding while we make sure to apply the law as is our duty.”
