Ocracoke to get new water tower, water system upgrades

Ocracoke School’s English as a Second Language (ESL) educator, Flavia Burton, is the school’s 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year.

Burton has taught second, third and fourth grades, and then got her ESL certification. She also earned her National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification, which she just renewed this year.

Her parents lived in India for several years in the 1950s, and Burton has studied in Florida and Europe, taught in Texas and in private international schools in Brazil, Barcelona and France.

Emilie Mason is the new Spanish teacher, K through 12, a new position for the school. She is collaborating with Flavia Burton, the ESL teacher who will retire at the end of the school year and then she will take on those responsibilities.

Ocracoke School welcomes six new teachers

Flavia Burton currently works as an English as a Second Language teacher at Ocracoke School. She previously taught second, third, and fourth grades, as well as teaching in Texas and at private international schools in Brazil, Barcelona, and France.

The other current board members are Flavia Burton, Bill Caswell and Ronnie O’Neal, all elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2014 and 2018.
