Born and raised in New York, Errol Wedra made a deliberate choice to build his life in Union County — drawn by its values of faith, family, and community. He and his wife settled here in 2014 to raise their children, and he has spent over a decade giving back to the place he proudly calls home.

Errol Wedra is a dedicated public servant with over 32 years of law enforcement experience. After completing a 20-year career in New York that included service with the NYPD, he continued his commitment to public safety and now serves in senior leadership at a local police department. Errol earned a master’s degree in justice administration and is a graduate of the UNC School of Government’s Municipal and County Administration Course.

Errol Wedra was born and raised in New York. He earned a master's degree in justice administration and completed the University of North Carolina School of Government's Municipal and County Administration Course. He and his wife have children.

A former NYPD officer and current law enforcement command staff member with more than 32 years of experience, brings real-world expertise in public safety and community leadership to the campaign. He is deeply committed to ensuring Union County never becomes the place he and his family left behind.

Like our neighbors in South Carolina, North Carolina should authorize local governments to require developers to pay their proportional share upfront for the roads, schools, parks, water, and sewer expansions their projects necessitate. This is not a tax on homeowners; it is a user fee that helps ensure new growth pays for itself, protects property tax stability, and prevents longtime residents from subsidizing new construction.

Growth Should Pay for Growth: Why Union County Needs Impact Fees

I urge our representatives in the North Carolina General Assembly either to pass enabling legislation allowing local governments to adopt carefully structured impact fees, with safeguards including transparent fee calculations, dedicated infrastructure funds, and credits for developers who provide on-site improvements, or, if necessary, to initiate a constitutional amendment and refer the proposal to the people of North Carolina in a statewide referendum for their approval. These protections would ensure accountability while giving communities the tools they need to manage growth responsibly.

House Bill 24 and Senate Bill-419 would restore downzoning authority statewide. 
House Bill 170 would restore that authority specifically for Union County. Senate Bill-165 would restore downzoning to Union County and Iredell County. These bills deserve strong public support.

Restore Local Control: Support Legislation to Reinstate Downzoning Authority

Restoring downzoning authority is not about blocking all growth. It is about ensuring that growth remains accountable to the communities that must live with its consequences. Local governments need the tools to do their job. These bills would return one.

SB 445, the Regulatory Reform Act of 2026, weakens that principle by requiring cities and counties to allow accessory dwelling units (ADUs), often called “granny flats,” and by-right residential redevelopment in many commercial and industrial areas. The bill overrides numerous local zoning restrictions involving density, parking, building height, and rental use.

SB 1047 and SB 445: Another Raleigh Power Grab for Developers and Special Interests

Supporters argue these measures will streamline development and reduce bureaucracy.

But streamlining often comes at a cost.

Together, SB 445 and SB 1047 make it more difficult for local governments to update zoning standards, gather meaningful public input, negotiate development conditions, and thoroughly evaluate projects that may affect neighborhoods for decades.
