2026 North Carolina General Election

By a 6-1 tally at a special Sept. 26 meeting, the Dare County Board of Education approved a motion to ask the Dare County Commissioners to fund a “universal meals” program that would provide free meals to all students in the Dare County Schools. The sole vote on the Board of Education against advancing the universal meals plan came from Ron Payne, who had previously raised objections to the idea and engaged in what at times became a heated discussion with Board of Education Member Mary Ellon Ballance.

In his remarks, Payne referred to a recent social media post about a Dare County student being denied a lunch, asserting that the “Facebook Mafia took over” and created a crisis where there was not one. “Up until then, there’s no crisis in terms of lunch and breakfast,” he added. “I’m still not sure where our crisis is.”
