Herman Tyson earned an associate degree in business management. He previously served as president of the Scotland County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and vice chair of the Scotland County Civic League.

Herman previously worked as an account and customer service representative for Meritor, an automotive parts manufacturer.

Herman previously served on the Scotland County Board of Education from 2017 to 2024. He was appointed to represent Stewartsville Township in 2017, elected in 2018, and reelected in 2022. He resigned in January 2024 after moving outside the district.
