In terms of economics, Lykins favors the natural trends of the free market as the best path toward growth, not government tampering. When a government attempts to stimulate the market, the result is business failures, increased taxation, and a housing shortage, he wrote.

Lykins likewise challenged the way the city spends its money. “Whether it be millions on one major capital project, or thousands on hundreds of projects, the spending is out of hand,” he said. From Lykins’s perspective, the Lincolnton City Council is a “rubber stamp machine, voting yes on everything that comes before their desk, and I vow to put an end to the tax and spend policies they continue to uphold.”

On social issues, Lykins said too much time has been spent on ineffective policies such as the social district, which he claims has not shown any positive impact on the central business district and is a blatant example of local government “sticking its hand in the free market.”
