Layla is currently a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 37th Legislative District. She was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2021 and 2023. She previously served on the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 2018 to 2020. Layla ran for New York City Council in 2026 but did not win.
