On December 29th, Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law A.336-A/S.2966-A, requiring medical professionals to co-prescribe an opioid antagonist, such as naloxone, with new opioid prescriptions when certain patient risk factors are present. This legislation was sponsored by Assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein (D-Bayside) and Senator Pete Harckham and passed both Houses with bipartisan support this spring. In an effort to increase its availability, the new law requires that naloxone be co-prescribed to patients with a history of overdose, or who are prescribed a high dose or cumulative prescriptions that result in 90 morphine milligram equivalents or more per day, or who concurrently use benzodiazepines.

In July 2011, Assemblyman Braunstein’s first bill to be signed into law banned so-called “bath salts” (Chapter 130 of 2011). Assemblyman Braunstein’s legislation protecting New Yorkers from fraudulent attorneys by making the unlicensed practice of law a felony was signed into law in December 2012 (Chapter 492 of 2012).

Assemblyman Braunstein’s legislation requiring campuses to notify local law enforcement of on-campus violent crimes and missing persons was signed into law in December 2014 (Chapter 486 of 2014), and his bill establishing the crime of unlawful dissemination or publication of an intimate image, also known as “revenge porn,” was enacted in July 2019 (Chapter 109 of 2019).

Queens, NY – On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Assemblyman Edward Braunstein and Senator Toby Ann Stavisky held an event at the Beech Hills Apartments in Douglaston to celebrate the signing of the Ground Lease Renewal Bill (A.10467A/S.9721A). This legislation, sponsored by the Assemblymember and Senator, effectively saves the equity of thousands of cooperative homeowners throughout New York City. Currently, affected cooperative corporations cannot exercise the renewal clauses in their long-term ground leases until the expiration of the lease. This has led mortgage companies like Fannie Mae to stop issuing conventional 30-year mortgages. Now, because of this amendment, affected co-ops can renew or extend their ground leases at any time, giving mortgage companies more certainty to offer mortgages to potential buyers.
