James King earned his bachelor's degrees in economics and government from from Centre College. He lives with his wife, Lora, in Ashland, Kentucky.

James currently serves as the treasurer of the Northeast Kentucky Economic Development Authority. He is also the president of the Ashland Kiwanis Club and treasurer of the Ashland Area Business Boosters Club. James was previously the executive vice president and member of the board of directors for Home Federal Savings and Loan.
