Wants to consult with students about creating more activities for them downtown.

Many faces from Midway attended a “Day for Midway” including non-incumbent city council candidates John McDaniel and Steve Simoff. McDaniel said the event reminded him of something the town used to do in the 60’s called “International Days.” Simoff said he had been to the event the last two years, and loved to see the community and the university work together. “I would like to see more students downtown, and find more things for them to do,” said Simoff. “I would like to visit with some of the students to see what they would like to see or do in Midway.”

Simoff expressed the need to resolve the parking situation for businesses downtown. “An idea I have is that if you own a business try to find a place off the street so that your customers can park there,” he said. Simoff said each parking spot in front of businesses downtown is worth about $5,000.

Supports city assistance for downtown businesses when COVID-19 slows business activity.

Simoff said he wants to help the council continue to support the community’s needs, such as how the city supported business during COVID-19. He approves of the relief funding that was given to Midway businesses and said, “It was one of the best things the city council did.” If the council has another such opportunity, Simoff said, he would support that. “If it would come up again and we’re still fighting the covid virus and things are slow,” he said, “all the businesses downtown certainly can use some support.”
