I know firsthand how important it is for voices to be heard within our school district. And I know understand that our schools receive the lions share of local tax dollars. Ensuring that your tax dollars are used wisely and not taken disproportionately as compared to the other governing bodies within Jessamine County is my NUMBER 1 PRIORITY!

Calls for a referendum on the school tax rate after the board rejected a compensating rate that he said would have prevented a tax increase.

“Since the Board kept the current rate despite property valuation increases and rejected the compensating rate --which would have prevented a tax increase and the majority of people who attended a public hearing supported -- the stakeholders of Jessamine County Schools are prepared to utilize (state law) and force this decision to a referendum. And once that happens, it is no longer in the Board’s control, “ Wides said Tuesday.

Wides said a 4% increase from last year would generate $1.63 million, for a total of $42.5 million. The approved rate of 67.8 cents per $100 would generate a 10.22% increase in revenue—$4.18 million—for a total of over $45 million. It will bring an increase in revenue greater than the compensating rate, plus 4% and required a public hearing. The compensating rate of 64.5 cents would generate a 5.22% increase—$2.13 million—for a total in excess of $43 million. The board’s proposal is $2.5 million more than the 4% increase in revenue, and $2 million more than the compensating rate. “The question is—do we need that much more?,” Wides said.
