Gov. Kemp Announces Three Appointments to Superior Courts

Barbara Sosebee is from Blue Ridge, Georgia. She earned her bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Georgia. 

Barbara currently serves as a superior court judge for the Appalachian Judicial Circuit. She was appointed in 2023. She previously served as the district attorney of the Appalachian Judicial Circuit. She served two full terms from 2013 to 2023. 

Barbara previously worked as the sole practitioner of B. Alison Sosebee, a juvenile court judge pro tem for the Appalachian Judicial Circuit, a city attorney for the City of East Elijay and the City of McCaysville, and a judge pro tem for the Municipal Court of Elijay. 

As superior court judge, oversees cases involving criminal felonies, the administration of wills and estates, evictions of renters, and divorce proceedings, and exercises authority to review and correct the rulings of lower courts.

As a district attorney, prosecuted civil and criminal actions under state law and presented cases before grand juries.

As a juvenile court judge, oversaw all cases involving individuals under 18 who are abused, neglected, or parentless, as well as the emancipation process, and sentencing for certain violent felonies committed by individuals ages 13 to 17.

As a city attorney, provided legal counsel and representation to the city and its officials, prepared legal opinions and answers to complaints for the law department, conducted interviews, reviewed records, and developed case strategy for the law department’s prosecutions.

As a municipal court judge, oversaw cases involving traffic offenses and local ordinance violations, conducted preliminary hearings in criminal cases, issued search and arrest warrants, and determined sentencing in certain minor criminal cases.

Barbara Alison Sosebee

- Georgia Superior Court Judges hear a wide range of criminal cases from petty theft and public drunkenness to murder. Some cases in front of the Georgia Superior Court involve the death penalty. 
- On the civil side, Superior Court Judges hear cases on divorce, titles to land, contract disputes, and premises liability. 
- Superior Court Judges are elected by judicial circuit. Each county surrounding Atlanta has its own judicial circuit, while rural judicial districts typically consist of multiple counties.
- Superior Court Judges are elected to four year terms. Elections are nonpartisan. The Governor can appoint Superior Court Judges when vacancies arise.
