Lanny Elwyn Thomas lives in Trion, Georgia. He earned his bachelor's degree in education from West Georgia College and his master's degree and Education Specialist degree from Jacksonville State University. He has volunteered with the Lookout Mountain Court Appointed Special Advocates, the Summerville/Trion Optimist Club, and the Georgia Municipal Association, District 1. He lives with his wife, Chrysan, and their four adult children.

Lanny Elwyn Thomas is a former mayor of the Town of Trion. He first won the office in 2000 and served one term before stepping down. He later returned to public office as a Trion city council member and was subsequently re-elected as mayor, demonstrating long-term trust from his community.
