Vernon Jones is originally from  Laurel Hill, North Carolina. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from North Carolina Central University and later completed an executive program at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He lives in the Atlanta, Georgia.



Vernon previously served as chief executive officer of DeKalb County. Earlier in his career he worked in the telecommunications industry, first at MCI Communications and later at BellSouth Corporation

Vernon previously served as a state representative in the Georgia House of Representatives for two non-consecutive periods. He was first elected in 1993, representing the 71st House district from 1993 to 2001, and again from 2017 to 2021, representing the 91st House district. Vernon ran for governor and for election to the U.S. House to represent Georgia's 10th Congressional District in 2022 but did not win. He also ran for U.S. Senate in 2008, for the U.S. House to represent Georgia's 10th Congressional District in 2010, and for sheriff of DeKalb County in 2014 but did not win any of these races.
