Community Involvement

Most of my time outside work goes to the places my family actually lives in: our kids' school, our neighborhood, and our city.

After two years as Secretary of the PTO board, I now serve as its Community Partner Liaison. I connect our school with local businesses that are able to give back, so our staff and students have the best possible day-to-day experience.

HOA Board Secretary
Sterling on the Lake

As Secretary of my HOA board, I help shape the policies and initiatives that maintain our neighborhood's quality of life. I focus on fostering community connection, ensuring sustainable management, and planning for the future.

I lead engineering teams, and after 20+ years I’ve learned the work is mostly about people: clear goals, honest feedback, and room to grow. The bigger motivation is at home. Between my two boys, Kim and I have more than a decade ahead of us in these schools and this neighborhood, and I want to spend it being useful.

As of October 15, 2026, Charles Thompson’s website did not contain information on this issue.

Flowery Branch has grown by roughly 40 percent in just five years. We are not deciding whether growth is coming. It is already here. We are deciding what we do with it.

I want to protect the history, neighborhoods, and parts of this community that people already love. I also want younger families to have a way into the city, longtime residents to be able to downsize without leaving it, and local businesses to have enough support to thrive.

The first things I'd work on

The city's rezoning application already collects the names and addresses of the neighbors next door. Let's require a mailed notice so people have a better chance to get involved before the council votes. Oakwood and Gainesville both do it, and we can too.

The comprehensive plan the council adopted in May sets a housing mix: 70 percent single-family homes, 15 percent townhomes, and 15 percent multi-family. Staff already tracks it. Let's share those numbers every time a rezoning comes before the council, so residents can see how each decision affects the housing mix we've agreed to work toward.

Wants to preserve established neighborhoods while enabling younger families to move into the city and longtime residents to downsize locally.

Calls for publishing metrics on the mix of housing with every rezoning proposal.

And I want new development to pay for the infrastructure it needs before it shows up.

All three are already on my door hanger and my flyer. Before any and all of that, though, I want to hear from more of my neighbors.
