My mother was part of Show Low’s very first graduating class in 1976, Joey and I walked the halls of SLHS 20+ years ago, and now we get to watch our own kids do the same as a senior and a freshman.

What role should the school board play in curriculum development?
The school board should provide oversight and accountability for curriculum while allowing qualified educators to make day-to-day instructional decisions. Its role should include adopting curriculum aligned with Arizona academic standards, reviewing student-performance data, approving instructional materials through a transparent process, and ensuring that parents have meaningful opportunities to provide input. The board should also ensure that curriculum is academically rigorous, age-appropriate, fact-based and accessible to students with different learning needs.

School Curriculum

I feel Show Low Unified School District’s three most pressing issues are: 1. Recruiting and retaining qualified employees. As a rural district, Show Low competes for teachers, bus drivers, substitutes, and support staff. I would prioritize competitive compensation, benefits and professional development, before adding administrative positions. 2. Student achievement and support. The district must continue improving reading, mathematics, graduation readiness and special education. The budget should protect classroom instruction first—effective teachers, manageable class sizes and intervention programs. 3. Financial sustainability amid uncertain enrollment and funding.

Plans to use conservative enrollment projections and maintain reserves to address funding uncertainty.

The district’s FY2026 planning seems to anticipate reductions in federal and state grant funding. Because Arizona funding is closely connected to enrollment, even slight changes can affect revenue. I would use conservative enrollment projections and maintain an appropriate reserve for unseen circumstances.

Student Wellbeing

Decisions should be guided by state requirements, reliable research, measurable student outcomes, teacher expertise, and be a responsible use of district funds. The board should not micromanage individual classrooms or replace the professional judgment of teachers and administrators. Instead, it should establish clear expectations and ensure that every student receives a high-quality education.

Opposes board micromanagement of classrooms or replacing the professional judgment of teachers and administrators.

Teachers

Supports providing required special-education evaluations without charging families and seeking additional state funding when ESA responsibilities are unfunded mandates.

How will you address the costs of special education evaluations and proportionate share services for ESA students, and what policies and pricing would you set regarding ESA students participating in sports at your district’s schools?
Required special-education evaluations provisions should be provided without charging families. I would request transparent tracking of these costs, maximize available federal and state funding and advocate for additional state funding when ESA-related responsibilities create unfunded mandates.

Said proportionate-share services should reflect federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funding, accurate student counts, and meaningful family consultation.

Proportionate-share services should be based on the federal IDEA allocation, accurate student counts and meaningful consultation with families. I will also need to spend some time looking into all the policies pertaining to the issue as I educate myself on the issues.

Supports ESA students participating in district athletics when legally permitted and subject to the same requirements and transparent cost-based pricing as other students.

For athletics, I would support ESA students’ participation when legally permitted, space is available, and they meet the same academic, eligibility, safety, attendance, conduct and tryout requirements as other participants. Pricing should be transparent and based on the district’s documented per-participant cost.
