Tiffany Cabán - The New York City Council

Tiffany is from Richmond Hill, Queens. She has a bachelor’s degree in Crime, Law, and Justice from Pennsylvania State University and a Juris Doctorate from New York Law School. She lives in Astoria with her two rescue dogs, Natalie and Coltrane.

Tiffany is a public defender. She worked at New York County Defender Services and the Legal Aid Society's Criminal Defense Practice, where she represented over a thousand indigent clients in cases ranging from turnstile jumping to homicide. Throughout her professional career, she used the law to help New York City’s most vulnerable communities.

Tiffany is currently the Council Member for New York City Council District 22. She was elected in 2021 and has served one term. Before joining the New York City Council, Tiffany ran for Queens District Attorney in 2019 but did not win. 

Supports expanding paid family leave to independent contractors and gig workers.

Supports creating a citywide portable benefits model to provide social benefits to workers regardless of employment status.

Supports implementing just cause and whistleblower protections to combat unfair and discriminatory firings.

Supports prohibiting low-wage workers from entering into non-compete agreements.

Supports investing in arts programming and creating an Arts Corps to beautify neighborhoods, hire local artists, and promote artistic expression through media and community events.

Supports eliminating standardized tests and admission screens at the middle school level.

Opposes mayoral control of New York City schools and supports municipal control with greater legislative intervention and accessible election procedures.

Supports the implementation of climate education in New York public schools.

Supports providing safe shelter for homeless individuals, saying "We cannot treat human beings like a problem to be shuffled."

Supports accelerating the production of a resiliency plan for District 22 that considers land use and zoning.

Opposes police involvement in evictions and homelessness, saying "Housing precarity and homelessness are citywide crises."

Supports replacing police with de-escalation and behavioral health experts during demonstrations.

Supports the creation of non-police traffic responder teams trained in de-escalation, auto mechanics, and first aid to handle roadway emergencies.

Supports comprehensive investment in street infrastructure, free public transportation, and urban planning that enhances street safety with bike lanes and pedestrian open spaces.

Supports universal healthcare access for all New Yorkers, regardless of employment or immigration status, and advocates for funding through tax reforms and reallocating funds from policing and prisons.
