Meet the candidates: Debbie Martin, Hoschton mayoral candidate ...

Debbie Martin is a single mother and grandmother. She has a bachelor of science in business administration and management from the University of Phoenix. She moved to Hoschton in 2020.

Debbie is a retired project manager. She worked at a medical device company for 22 years, starting as a document manager and quickly progressing to project manager. In that role, she coordinated with several departments on procedures and processes, schedules, budgets, and delivery of services, managing 22 employees worldwide. After moving to Hoschton in 2020, she worked part-time for Visiting Angels as a companion caregiver.

Debbie is currently the Mayor of Hoschton. She was elected in 2023 and is serving her first term. Before becoming mayor, she served on the Hoschton City Council from 2022 to 2023.

Prioritizes short-term and long-term fiscal responsibility.

Supports reinstating monthly mayor/community meetings and removing time limits on citizen input.

Supports changing the payment structure for water and sewer costs in new developments.

Plans to address infrastructure, including police and fire services.

Plans to address infrastructure issues, including water, sewer, traffic, police, fire, and EMS.

Supports establishing a planning and zoning commission with regional experts in water, sewer, stormwater management, and transportation.

- The mayor leads the executive branch of local government, presiding over city council meetings, making sure city departments run smoothly, and providing services to citizens. 
- The mayor runs the city day to day and prepares the budget each year, meaning that they propose how much funding goes to each city department, including the police department, city parks, transportation, and the fire department. 
- The mayor also hires the Police Chief, Fire Chief, and city department heads, such as City Planning, Parks & Recreation, and Transportation. 
- Most Georgia mayors are elected in odd years to four year terms. Elections are nonpartisan.
