Pat earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, Tacoma. She lives with her husband, retired Judge John McCarthy, in Tacoma. Pat has 4 adult children and 11 grandchildren.

Pat previously worked as an administrator and advisor for the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Program at the University of Washington Tacoma.

Pat McCarthy is the state auditor of Washington. She was first elected in 2016 and is serving her 2nd term. She previously served as a Tacoma School Board member, Pierce County auditor, and Pierce County executive.
