He earned his bachelor's degree in public health from Texas A&M University and a master's degree in health care administration from The University of Texas at Arlington. Venton has also served as a board member for the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas, Co-chair of Dallas Southern Pride, and Member of the Texas HIV/STD Community Planning Group.

Venton is the founder and chief executive officer of the Southern Black Policy and Advocacy Network (SBPAN). He is also a real estate agent with Brix Realty and a principal at Hill Jones Consulting. He previously worked as senior director for government affairs for the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care and as program officer for LGBT health & wellness initiatives for the Nationa Black Justice Coalition. He also worked as a team leader, community building coordinator for the University of California San Francisco, and associate director of community programs for Abounding Prosperity.
