Ed earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Columbia Southern University.

Ed served 23 years with the Pennsylvania State Police as a state trooper and was promoted to the rank of corporal. He also served in the U.S. Air Force as a munitions maintenance specialist and received a meritorious service award.
