Shawn earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in business administration from Jacksonville University. 

Shawn is retired. He previously worked as an avionics program manager for IS&S. He also worked and served in the U.S. Navy. He served for 7 years from 1990 to 1997 as a naval aviator. He then worked as assistant air officer, director of operations for Helicopter Maritime Strike Weapons School, and senior project manager and strategic planner to the Commander, Fleet Cyber Command.
