Michael is originally from Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Center High School. He lives with his wife, Marian, and they raised 2 children. Michael is a volunteer firefighter and attends St. Francis Cabrini Church. He founded the nonprofit organization Crusaders in America, which provides scholarships to high school graduates and underserved youths in sports.

Michael was a mail carrier in Monaca, worked at the former Jones & Laughlin Steel mill, was a construction worker as a member of Local 833 of the Laborers Union, and worked in baggage and operations at US Airways. He also owned Zippy's Bar in Aliquippa.
